Intro
As there is very little rainfall in this region, an external water source has always been needed to make agriculture profitable. From a very early stage, attempts were therefore made to channel the water from the Ried Glacier and the Riedbach stream. With its four water conduits, Grächen is known as a heartland of irrigation.
Eggeri
Over six kilometers long, the “Eggeri“ is the longest and most popular of Grächen’s irrigation channels. Above Gasenried and Grächen, it leads through the idyllic forest via Alp Äbnet, past a picnic and barbecue spot, up to the town section of Bärgji. Stops on the Ravensburg Game Trail lie on its course. Cozy excursion restaurants are located at the start and end of the Suonen trail.
Bineri
The “Bineri” was built as early as the beginning of the 17th century. Its name is derived from the village “Bina”, where it channels its waters. Like the other three Suonen of Grächen, it too is the subject of various stories that can be read on the markers on the Grächen Saga Trail.
Chilcheri
The “Chilcheri” canal channels the water of the Ried Glacier through the larch forest and across alpine meadows up to the village of Grächen.
Drieri
The “Drieri” is fed by the Riedbach stream and meanders gently through vast stretches of alpine meadows. Follow the gentle gurgling sound and hike through the forest, past alpine roses and rare mountain flowers.
The water is channelled from the glacier to the pastureland on a very gentle slope, so the hiking paths along the irrigation channels are suitable for families with children and older people.
