The moment when the sun kisses the Matterhorn awake is unique. During this exclusive sunrise trip on the Gornergrat Bahn cog rail, guests can marvel at Switzerland’s most famous mountain as they see it in a whole new light. The perfect experience for nature enthusiasts, pleasure-seekers and lovers.
It is still dark in Zermatt when the doors of the Gornergrat Bahn cog rail open for the exclusive sunrise ride. This is a special experience that is offered every Sunday in the summer months from July to September. Even the journey up to Rotenboden station at around 2,800 metres above sea level is unforgettable. It takes place in the dark. Shortly after departure, the interior lights are switched off, making it even easier to watch the impressive mountain scenery as it wakes up.
After a tranquil 20-minute trip, the train reaches the station. From there, a short path leads down to Riffelsee lake, where the morning spectacle is even more impressive. When conditions are perfectly calm, the Matterhorn is reflected majestically on the surface of the water. Secluded spots around the lake invite you to enjoy the big moment undisturbed. A few minutes later, the peak of Switzerland’s most famous mountain slowly turns reddish, sometimes pink or even purple. While every sunrise is different, they all have one thing in common: the magical atmosphere is moving and radiates serenity.
The journey then continues on the Gornergrat Bahn cog rail to the very top of the Gornergrat. You can then enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, with the Gornergrat’s diverse offerings just waiting to be discovered. The region is ideal for walks or easy to challenging hikes. The view of the glacier world and the 29 Viertausender peaks (‘four-thousanders’, meaning mountains with summits that are at least four thousand metres above sea level) is particularly impressive here.
The ticket price also includes the return journey to Zermatt, which you can undertake whenever you want to. Guests can get on and off once at each station. The experience can optionally be booked with a breakfast buffet on top of the Gornergrat.
