Intro
The history of the botanical garden of the University of Basel goes as far back as the 16th century, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It also offers an exciting variety of plants in a well-maintained haven of peace right in the heart of the city.
The botanical garden of the University of Basel, which today is close to the Spalentor (Gate of Spalen), was founded by Caspar Bauhin in 1589 and was originally located beneath what is now the old university on Rheinsprung. It connected to other older private gardens, which were used by Basel’s apothecaries and doctors to make medicines and for study purposes. Caspar Bauhin was the first professor teaching anatomy and botany and was also known as the “Father of Botany”.
One highlight of the garden close to the Spalentor, which was laid in the 19th century, is the historic “Viktoriahaus”. In the popular tropical glasshouse, you will also be whisked away into the fascinating world of the rainforest.
