Via Albula/Bernina
Overview
Intro
39 tunnels, 55 bridges, a 1123-meter height difference: the Albula section of the Rhaetian Railway is a superb example of how railways have opened up access to the Alpine countryside. On the Preda to Bergün section, there is an railway adventure trail: a 2.5-hour hike with information about the world's most spectacular railway line.
Description
This area has been awarded the status of World Heritage Site due to the Rhaetian Railway and the Albula line has been under UNESCO protection since 2008 due to the unique and dramatic layout of the line. As if begging to be filmed, the railway twists from Bergün up the steep slopes, disappearing into tunnels every now and then, just to emerge a short while later where you least expect it. Worth a visit is the model railway system on a scale of 1:87 in the regional museum in Bergün.
Fortunately the Historic Railway Trail, a two and a half hour hike, is there to answer the many questions about this most spectacular stretch of railway in the world.
It is after all located in the same unique high alpine environment. Because between Bergün and Preda you are not only in a World Heritage Site but also in the nature reserve of Parc Ela, whose 548 square km surface area makes it the biggest reserve in Switzerland.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
