Herbstmesse Basel / Autumn fair
Overview
Intro
The Basel Autumn fair is an annual event in Basel that looks back on a history of over 550 years. It is the largest funfair in Switzerland and one of the largest city fairs in Europe.
Autumn is fair season! The Basel Autumn fair (Basler Herbstmesse) takes place every October and lasts for two weeks. As Switzerland’s largest annual fair, it has something for old and young alike, from thrilling rides along the tracks of its wilder attractions to culinary delights and stalls selling a variety of items. The funfair extends over seven large squares as well as an exhibition hall in the city centre. What’s more, the stalls at the Krämer- und Erlebnismarkt on Petersplatz will remain open for two further days after the funfair closes.
The fair traces its roots back to the late Middle Ages, when the authorities of the city of Basel planned to organise an annual fair in the wake of an economic crisis and even received permission to do so from the then German Emperor Frederick III. Basel received a deed bearing the Emperor’s seal on 11 July 1471, which granted the City of Basel permission to hold a fair “for all time”. The Basel Autumn Fair is not only the largest but also the oldest annual fair in Switzerland.
